A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, but in the case of Hansel, that number seems small. The before and after photographs of Hansel tell a story of unspeakable cruelty but also immeasurable hope.
Our rescue is inundated daily with requests to help dogs in need. These cases range in severity, but we are heartbroken by each of them. Hansel was one of the worst cases. (Read about Hansel’s rescue and rehabilitation here.
The dog in the “after” picture is nearly unrecognizable as the same dog who came to Val’s Pals during Hurricane Harvey. But for the small dark stripe in the center of his forehead, it would be nearly impossible to believe they are the same dog. It took 6 months of thorough and expensive medical care, but eventually the cowering and abused dog became a regal animal with clear eyes and a gleaming coat.
Yet as impressive as Hansel’s physical transformation is, it pales in comparison to his emotional transformation. Finding a loving family was the final part of Hansel’s journey to healing. Hansel has been adopted by his forever family, and he will live out his days in comfort, surrounded by a loving and adoring family.
The work we do at Val’s Pals is often devastating. We cannot save them all. But Hansel’s story is a reminder that our rescue efforts do make a difference, not only in the life of a dog, but in the lives of the humans who adopt their beloved pet from our rescue.
